The Wobbly Table Problem

Why does a four-legged table rock on uneven ground, and why does rotating it sometimes magically fix the wobble?

If one leg is effectively higher than the others, contact alternates between two opposite legs and the table rocks.

What causes the wobble?

Most floors are not perfectly flat. A tiny height mismatch means all four legs cannot touch at once, so the table pivots between two stable contact pairs.

Why rotation can help

For many smooth floors, rotating the table changes which leg sits on each bump or dip. At some angle, the height errors can cancel, bringing all four legs into contact.

Practical fix in 30 seconds

  1. Press on each corner to identify the floating leg.
  2. Rotate the table gradually and test every 20-30 degrees.
  3. If wobble remains, add a thin shim under the short-contact leg.
  4. For permanent fix, trim the longest leg or install leveling feet.
